Parts of the Atom

atom Building blocks of all matter
proton particle of the atom with a positive charge
nucleus particle of the atom with a neutral charge
electron particle of the atom with a negative charge
nucleus center of the atom that holds the protons and neutrons
shells OR orbitals area around the outside of the nucleus that holds the electrons
atomic number identifies an atom by telling the number of protons in an atom
atomic mass the protons and neutrons together in the atom
isotope an atom with a different number of neutrons than most of the atoms of that element
Periodic Table of Elements A chart that identifies each element in order by atomic number
