| Term | Definition |

| Alliteration | The repetition of similar sounds, most often consonant sounds, at the beginning of words. For example: Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. |
| Couplet | Two consecutive paired lines of poetry, usually rhymed, and usually forming a complete stanza. |
| Drama | A genre of literature in which a story is intended to be performed before an audience by actors on a stage. |
| Free Verse | Poetry that has no fixed pattern of meter, rhyme, line length, or stanza arrangement. |
| Oxymoron | A figure of speech in which opposite ideas are combined. For example: bright darkness, wise fool, hateful love, jumbo shrimp. |
