digestive system

TermDefinition
Mouth Functions: chewing/mastation, amylase production (digest starch), bolus formaiton, swallowing reflex
Pharynx/Throat Functions: propelling swallowed food (peristalsis), epiglottis prevents choking
Large Intestine/Colon Functions: vitamins, water, and electrolytes are reclaimed, propulsion of fecal matter
Pancreas Functions: secretes ---- juice which breaks down all types of food, Endocrine function = release of insulin and glucagon
Liver Functions: produces bile, processes bloodborne nutrients, store fat-soluable vitamins and carbs, detoxification
Stomach Functions: contract and relax to break down food (mechanically), produce enzymes to digest food
Small Intestine Functions: further digest and absorb nutrients coming from the stomach, absorb nutrients and water to be used by the body
Gastrin (secreted into stomach) Function - stimulates gastric juice (hunger)
Secretin (secreted into duodenum) Function - inhibits gastric juice (stops hunger)
Acid mucus (mucus neck cells) Function - prevents HCl from breaking down stomach wall
HCl and Intrinsic factor (parietal cells) Function - kills bacteria, activates digestive enzymes, vitamin B12 absorption
Pepsinogen--> Pepsin (cheif cells) Function - digest proteins
Amylase (salivary gland in mouth) Function - break down starches
Mesentary Membrane Function - micronutrients absorbed while into bloodstream while moving through small intestine
Cardiac Sphincter Connects esophagus to stomach
Pyloric Sphincter Connects stomach to small intestine
Ingestion Take in food
Propulsion Pushing food down/through
Mechanical Digestion Making food smaller before chemical digestion
Chemical Digestion Breaking down food using chemicals and hormones (secreted)
Absorption Absorbing nutrients
Elimination Riding body of waste
