What is Irridentism? The desire to unite all Italian-speaking people into one nation (type 3 nationalism)
What were the Blackshirts? Fasci Italiana di Combattimento Mussolini's revolutionary militia Original group made up of WWI veterans Used violent intimidation tactics (beatings, castor oil...)
Where does the name "fascism" come from? Derived from "Fascio" (faces) Ancient Roman symbol (drawing comparison to Ancient Roman Empire) Symbolized strength through unity
What is authoritarianism? Political party without multiple political parties, government and police power enforce status quo. Little civil rights, like voting, checks and balances separation of powers, due process
What is a dictator? Ruler with total unchecked power (not a hereditary monarch)
What makes a government militaristic? Providing large resources to military even during peacetime. Glorifying the military through parades, propaganda, etc...
How do fascists view individual interests? Not well. They believe in putting good of state above personal interests and happiness; goals of state more important than individual rights
Did Mussolini invent Fascism? No. He coined the term, but fascist principles evolved from the late 1800s-1920s
What is autocracy? Rule by one. Centralized autocracy = strong national government; non-existent local governments
What were the affects of Fascism in Italy? Transformed Italy into a Totalitarian state. Led Italy to ruin in WWII.
