Congruence and Similarity
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Angle Angle Similarity | If two angles of one triangle are congruent to two angles of another triangle, then the triangles are similar |
| Composition of Transformations | The resulting transformation when a transformation is applied to a figure and then another transformation is applied to its image |
| Congruent | Having the same measure |
| Corresponding Parts | Parts of congruent or similar figures that are in the same relative position |
| Indirect Measurements | A technique using properties of similar polygons to find distances or lengths that are difficult to measure directly |
| Similar | If one image can be obtained from another by a sequence of transformations and dilations |
| Image | new image |
| Preimage | original geometric figure |
| Transformation | a change in a figure from its original state to a new state |
| Translation | a slide of a figure from one position to another without turning it |
| Reflection | a mirror image of a figure that has been flipped across a line |
| Line of reflection | the line that a figure flips across |
| Center of rotation | a fixed point |
| Rotation | a turn about a fixed point |
| Clockwise | to turn right |
| Counterclockwise | to turn left |
| Dilation | a change in which an image gets smaller or larger in size |
| Scale factor | ratio of the side lengths of an image to the side lengths of the preimage |
| Enlargement | to make bigger |
| Reduction | to make smaller |
| Center of dilation | the center point that a figure dilates about |
