| anachronism | something out of the proper time |
| tone | attitude a writer takes toward the audience, a subject, or a character |
| theme | central idea of a work of literature |
| ethos | appeal to credibility |
| pathos | appeal to emotion |
| logos | appeal to logic |
| dramatic irony | when the audience is aware of something that the character(s) is not |
| situational irony | an outcome that turns out to be very different from what was expected |
| verbal irony | sarcasm (when what is said is the opposite of what is intended) |
| genre | a major category or type of literature |
| tragic hero | A literary character who makes an error of judgment or has a fatal flaw that brings on a tragedy |
| dystopian literature | A genre of fiction that offers a picture of an imagined world in which a social topic is exaggerated as a warning to society |
| logical fallacy | a flaw or error in logic or reasoning |
| parallel structure | repetition of the same pattern of words or phrases within a sentence or passage to draw attention to what has changed |
| inscrutable | unable to be understood |
| pensive | thoughtful, in a melancholy way |
| discontented | dissatisfied |
| malnourished | having bad health from poor nutrition |
| illogical | not done according to reason |
| ironic | suggesting a contrast between what one might expect and what actually happens |
