Chapter 3:1- 3:2
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is a volcano | A weak spot in the crust where molten material, or magma, comes to the surface. |
| Magma and lava are similar and different. How are they the same? How are magma and lava different? | They are the same because when magma reaches the surface it becomes lava. They are different because magma for molten rock is underground and lava for molten rock that breaks through the Earth's surface. |
| Where is the Ring of Fire located | From the southern tip of South America, up along the coast of North America, across the Bering Strait, down through Japan, and into New Zealand. |
| What are the two most common areas where volcanoes are formed | Volcanic activity occurs at two types of plate boundaries: mid-ocean ridges and subduction zones. |
| What is an island arc | the lower plate magma sinks beneath the deep-ocean trench into the asthenosphere. There it begins to melt, forming magma. Because it is less dense than the surrounding rock, the magma seeps upward through the cracks in the crust. |
| Why does magma move toward the surface from the mantle | Because liquid magma is less dense than the surrounding solid material, magma flows upward into any cracks in the rock above. Magma rises until it reaches the surface, or until it becomes trapped beneath layers of rock. |
| What’s inside of a magma chamber | Molten material, or magma |
| What is another name for a volcanic pipe on the web | volcanic conduits |
| What materials can leave a volcanic vent? Can a volcano have at least two vents? | gas, and lava No |
| What is a volcanic crater | A bowl shaped area that may form at the top of a volcano around the volcano’s central vent. |
| How does obsidian form | by the rapid cooling of viscous lava from volcanoes. |
| How does lava flow out of a volcano during a Quiet Eruption | Magma flows easily. In this case, the gas dissolved in the magma bubbles out gently. Thin, runny lava oozes quietly from the vent. |
| What is the difference between pahoehoe and aa | Pahoehoe is lava that in solidified form is characterized by a smooth, billowy, or ropy surface, while aa is lava that has a rough, jagged, spiny, and generally clinkery surface. |
| What creates explosive eruptions | If a lot of gas is trapped within magma, pressure will build and build until eventually the magma erupts explosively out of the volcano. |
| What is a pyroclastic flow | An explosive eruption hurls out ash, cinders, and bombs as well as gases. |
| What are the 3 stages of a volcano | Active, Dormant, Extinct |
| What is a hot spring | Groundwater heated by a nearby body of magma rises to the surface and collects in a natural pool. |
| Can people swim in some hot springs | If you are in a spacious hot spring pool, then yes, you can swim. |
| How is a geyser different from a hot spring | A hot spring is a pool of hot water and a geyser shots hot water up into the air. |
| Which type of eruption can cause damage, a quiet eruption or an explosive eruption | Both types of eruption can cause damage far from the crater’s rim. |
