| Term | Definition |

| Author's Purpose | An author's intent in writing a piece of literature. Authors typically write to accomplish one or more of the following purposes: persuade, entertain, inform, explain, describe. |
| Colloquial language | Informal speech that people use in everyday conversation. For example: kids instead of children; cool instead of fashionable. |
| Mood | The emotional quality or atmosphere of a literary work. A writer's choice of language, subject matter, setting, and tone as well as such sound devices as rhyme and rhythm, contribute to creating mood. |
| Paradox | A situation or statement that seems to be impossible or contradictory but is nevertheless true, literally or figuratively. For instance: a financial analyst files for bankruptcy. |
| Protagonist | The central character in a literary work, around whom the main conflict revolves. |
