Most of the animals in the Tropical Rain Forest live in what layer of the trees? canopy
What is it called when animals and land are destroyed? habitat destruction or deforestation
What are biomes usually described by? the types of VEGETATION that grow there and CLIMATE
How many types of grasslands are there? 3 - savanna, grassland, and chaparral
Write the order of the biomes from the North Pole towards the equator. Tundra, Taiga, Temperate Forest, Grassland, Desert, Tropical Rainforest
Deforestation of the rainforest may cause climate changes which in turn may cause what natural occurrence? Flooding and Erosion
What is one of the main factors that determine what type of plants grow in a biome? climate (temperature/precipitation)
If you were walking through a forest that gets large amounts of rain, has high humidity, and has moderate temperatures year round, what biome would you most likely be in? Temperate Rainforest
Biomes that have higher temperatures and less precipitation tend to have what type of vegetation? low plants, shrubs, and grasses.
Vegetation in biomes that have short trees, shrugs, and grasses usually lack a lot of what? rainfall/precipitation
A biome with less than 25 cm of precipitation a year is what biome? Desert
Animals in the Chapparal adapt by what means? A common adaptation of chaparral animals Is camouflage, shape or coloring that allows an animal to blend into its environment.
Why are occasional fires in the Chapparal beneficial to the biome? releases nutrients and opens space up for new growth
What types of landforms are found in the Chapparal? rocky hills and mountains
What is the temperature like in the Chapparal? warm summers, mild winters, dry
What other biome is the Chapparal most like? Why? desert; both are hot and dry
The Chapparal covers 5% of what US state? California
What is a threat to the Savanna Grasslands? agriculture, farming, overgrazing
What animals would you likely see in the Savanna biome? grazing animals; giraffes, zebras, elephants, gazelles, lions
What is a major threat to Grassland biomes of North America farming, overgrazing, soil erosion
What type of weather is in the Pacific Northwest? Temperate, high precipitation
What is the layer of frozen soil in the Tundra? permafrost
What do animals do in the Tundra to help protect themselves from the cold? They burrow underground. Some migrate and hibernate
Is there any biome colder than the tundra? No
How high have the temperatures in Death Valley in California ever reached? 134 degrees
How do animals survive the heat in the desert? Amphibians survive by estivating, or burying themselves in the ground and sleeping through the dry season. Insects are covered with body armor that helps them retain water. They are nocturnal.
What is the annual precipitation in the desert? High, moderate, low? Low
Where are deserts often formed? near large mountain ranges because mountains can block the passage of moisture-filled clouds, limiting precipitation.
Grasslands, such as the prairies of N. America, are often threatened by soil erosion because of what? Plowing and overgrazing
Which biome has the most species of all biomes? tropical rainforest
The Taiga is a forest biome dominated by coniferous trees such as what? evergreens - pines, firs, spruce
Animals that live in the desert usually search for food when? at night
Two of the tundra's threats are what? OIL exploration, extraction, and transport has disrupted many tundra habitats. CLIMATE CHANGE
Which biome is located in the North Arctic region? Tundra
What is the difference between a coniferous tree and a deciduous tree? Deciduous trees lose their leaves each fall while coniferous do not.
In which biome would you find buttresses on trees? Tropical Rainforest
Which forest receives a lot of rain all year long? Tropical Rainforest
Which forest tree loses its leaves each winter? deciduous
An evergreen tree does what? Leaves stay green year round
Which animal would you most likely find in the emergent layer of a forest? A monkey or an eagle? both???
Which level of a tree forest is in the middle section of the forest? Canopy
Which layer of a tree forest is in the very top of a forest? Emergent
What is the line on a map called that goes ACROSS and measures north and south of the equator? latitude
Which animal in the rainforest has algae on its coat? sloths
What biome do we live in? temperate deciduous forest
What is an epiphyte? plants that use another plant for support but not for nourishment, and are located on high trees in the canopy.
What is a threat to the rainforest? deforestation, slash/burn agriculture, illegal wildlife trade
