Gold Rush Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
bedrock Solid rock underlying loose deposits such as soil.
boomtown A town undergoing rapid growth due to sudden prosperity.
claim jumping Seizing another's claim of land, especially for mineral rights.
hardship Something that causes or entails suffering.
merchant A buyer and seller of goods for profit.
migrate To move from one country or region to another.
mineral A substance (such as quartz, coal, petroleum, salt, etc.) that is naturally formed under the ground.
pay dirt Earth or ore that yields a profit to a miner.
population The whole number of people or inhabitants in a country or region.
prospector A type of explorer, but one with a specific purpose of finding mineral deposits (such as gold).
