Bipolar 2Bipolar 2 recurrent bouts of major depression with the episodic occurrence of hypomania- this patient may never have experienced a full episode of mania
Manic state The manic phase may last from days to months and cause marked disruption of occupational and social functioning. It can include psychotic features.

Lithium mood stabilizer
Lithium normal levels 0.5-1.2 ml
Toxicity signs & symptoms blood level can become elevated in dehydration, profuse sweating and chronic diarrhea, toxicity can cause tremors, confusion, seizures, coma and even death
Lithium education early signs of Toxicity include nausea vomiting and sedation

Depressive Disorder Treatments • Antidepressants- REQUIRE SEVERAL WEEKS TO SHOW EFFECTS • Psychotherapy • Electroconvulsive therapy ECT • Transcranial magnetic stimulation- TMS
Depressive Disorder Nursing Interventions • Patience!!! • Promote honest/therapeutic communication • Provide consistent care • Healthy nutrition • Appropriate activity • Promote self-esteem • Small achievable goals
Suicide Warnings Signs verbal threats, expression of hopelessness, prior suicide attempts, risk-taking behaviors, talking about suicide, access to lethal methods
Suicide Therapeutic communication honest confrontational communication
Suicide Nursing Interventions threatens or talks about suicide must be taken seriously, monitor 10-15 minutes in the hospital facility, go home stay on the phone if not in a facility, maintain safety, remove all potential weapons, medications, crisis intervention per facility policy
