gambit (in chess) an opening in which a player makes a sacrifice, typically of a pawn, for the sake of some compensating advantage.
halcyon a mythical bird said by ancient writers to breed in a nest floating at sea at the winter solstice, charming the wind and waves into calm.
histrionic dramatic or theatrical
incendiary (of a device or attack) designed to cause fires.
maelstrom a powerful whirlpool in the sea or a river.
myopic nearsighted.
