Who is a vassal? A man who served a lord in a military capacity
What is one thing that Charlemagne did? Created the Carolingian Empire
What is a monk? A man who separates himself from ordinary society in order to pursue a life of dedication to God.
What were the Muslims of the Holy Land called by the European Christians? Infidels or unbelievers
What is schism? The separation between the Eastern Orthodox and the Catholic Church of the West
What did King John sign at Runnymede in 1215? A documents of rights called the Magna Carta or the Great Charter
What did the clergy, the nobility, the peasants, and the townspeople make up? Three estates, or classes of society
Who are people sent out to carry a religious message? Missionaries
What did the region of land given by the West Frankish king to the Vikings come to be called? Normandy
What did Saint Bernard of Clarivaux do? The monastic leader enlisted the aid of King Louis VII in a second Crusade
What was the first French parliament called? The Estates-General

How did knights show their fighting skills? In contests called tournaments
What happened in scriptoria? Monks would copy the scriptures and Latin classics in those rooms
What was the role of women during the Middle Ages? While the lord was away, war or court, the lady of the castle had to manage the estate. They were in charge of food supply and operated the household.

Essay Question: What were the Crusades? A series of military expeditions during the 11-13 centuries to regain the Hold Land. The push for the Crusades began when the Byzantine emperor, Alexius I, asked for aid. They wanted to take land from the infidels/Muslims. There were about 4-6 crusades.
Essay Question: Explain the codification of Roman Law-the Body of Civil Law It was Justinian's most important contribution. This code of Roman laws was the basis of imperial law. It also became the basis for much of the legal system in Europe.
Essay Question: Why were Monks so important for literature and faith to most households during the Middle Ages? They opened schools, maintained libraries, and copied books. They served as centers of educations. Overall, they became the new heroes of Christian civilization and were an important force in the new European civilization.
Essay Question: Explain Feudalism Feudalism was a political system, or institution, where nobles were granted the use of land that belonged to the king. The leaders also took care of the warrior's needs. The nobles swore an oath to give their loyalty and military services to the king
Essay Question: Describe the code of chivalry and give some examples of chivalry by a Medieval Knight It was a code of ethics that knights were supposed to uphold. Chivalry implied that knights should fight only for glory and not for material reward. They devoted themselves to his earthly feudal lord, heavenly lord, and his chosen lady.
