| Term | Definition |

| Horatian | Gentle, tolerant, witty, wise, etc. |
| Juvenalian | Sharp, angry, caustic, etc. |
| Wit | using in a quick and inventive way to create humor |
| Distortion | in a realistic context but will distort one or more aspects of reality |
| Situational Irony | something happening that is very different to what is expected |
| Verbal Irony | Figure of speech |
| Dramatic Irony | audience or readers understanding of events in a work surpass that of its characters |
| Paradox | self contradictory statement |
| Juxtaposition | the fact of two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect |
| Oxymoron | combines contradictory words with opposing meanings e.g. deafening silence |
| Hyperbole | exaggeration to point out a flaw to the audience |
| Understatement | true extent of something that is so evil that further exaggeration is impossible |
| Burlesque | comic exaggeration achieved through style |
| travesty | presents a serious subject frivolously |
| farce | satire that provokes laugh through highly exaggerated caricatures |
| Diction | silly words to enhance ridiculousness of a target or offensive language to emphasize vulgarity |
| Innuendo | making remarks that suggest something but do not refer to it directly |
| Puns | play on words that sound the same or have multiple meanings |
| Malapropisms | mistaken use of a word in place of a similar sounding one |
| Grotesque and Taboo subjects | create tension between horror and humor or laughter and revulsion |
| Invective | speech that criticizes someone or something fluently (rant) |
