U3 Terms and Definitions

TermDefinition
Scatterplots A plot that shows the relationship between 2 quantitative variables measured on the same individuals
Explanatory Variable The variable that is usually on the x axis, may explain or influence the response variable (can also be called "factor")
Response Variable The variable that is usually on the y axis, measures the outcome of the study
Positive Association Generally scatterplots with what would appear to be positive "slopes"
Negative Association Generally scatterplots with what would appear to be negative "slopes"
Regression Line A line that describes how a response variable (y) changes as an explanatory variable (x) changes
Extrapolation Use of a regression line for a prediction far outside the interval values for the explanatory variable used to make the line
Residual The difference between an observed value of the response variable and the predicted value
Variance The square of the standard deviation, how widely observations vary
