The mole
| Term | Definition |

| Avogadro's number | the number of particles in 1 mole (or mole) of a substance. |
| molar mass | the mass in grams of 1 mole of the substance |
| mole | a standard scientific unit for measuring large quantities of very small entities such as atoms |
| molecule | The smallest particle of a substance that has all of the physical and chemical properties of that substance. |
| scientific name | A name used by scientists, especially the taxonomic name of an organism that consists of the genus and species. |
| molecular mass | the chemical formula of an ionic compound that lists the ions in the lowest ratio that equals a neutral electrical charge. |
| molecular formula | a formula giving the number of atoms of each of the elements present in one molecule of a specific compound. |
| density | the quantity of something per unit volume, unit area, or unit length |
| formula mass | the sum of the average atomic masses of each atom represented in the chemical formula |
| percent composition | Tells you by mass what percent of each element is present in a compound. |
| empirical formula | the chemical formula of a compound that gives the proportions (ratios) of the elements present in the compound but not the actual numbers or arrangement of atoms. |
| atomic mass | the average mass of the atoms of an element measured in atomic mass unit |
