| paragraph | An indented part of a story with at least 3 sentences. |
| selection | An excerpt or part of the freading you just read. |
| passage | A brief portion of written work (part of a longer piace). |
| article | Often a nonfiction writing that would be found in a newspaper or magazine. |
| stanza | Series of lines in a poem arranged often by meter or rhyme. |
| respond | Answer. |
| describe | Tell how something looks or happened. |
| explain | Give facts and details that make the idea or concept clear and understandable. |
| sentence | A line with a subject and predicate; begins with a capital letter, ends with punctuation. |
| narrator | The person who is telling the story. |
| except | Everything but / including. |
| main idea | Whut the whole story is about / the big picture. |
| according to | Give details accotding to the passage. |
| based on | A way of saying, "as stated in," the story / article. |
| genre | A literary category such as fiction, biography, fantasy. |
| play | A script where various characters speak and act. |
| compare | Show how items are similar. |
| contrast | Show how items are different. |
| support | Provided evidence from the story to back-up your answer. |
| open-response | Written question on the MCAS test. |
