Moon Phases

TermDefinition
waxing an increasing amount of visible light on the moon's surface, light on the right side of the moon
waning a decreasing amount of visible light on the moon's surface, light on the left side of the moon
crescent less than half of the moon is visible from Earth, crescent shape on the moon
gibbous more than half (but not all) of the moon is visible from Earth, football shape on the moon
New Moon NO visible light on moon's surface. The backside of the moon is facing Earth
Waxing Crescent Moon crescent shape of visible light on right side of moon. About 25% of visible light. This phase is after a new moon.
1st Quarter Moon visible light on right half side of the moon. 50% of visible light. This phase is after a waxing crescent moon.
Waxing Gibbous Moon gibbous shape of visible light on right side of moon. About 75% visible light. This phase is after 1st quarter moon.
Full Moon 100% visible light on the side of the moon facing the sun. This phase is after waxing gibbous.
Waning Gibbous gibbous shape of visible light on the left side of the moon. About 75% visible light. This phase is after full moon.
3rd Quarter Moon visible light on left half side of moon. 50% visible light. This phase is after waning gibbous moon.
Waning Gibbous Moon crescent shape of visible light on the left side of the moon. About 25% visible light. This phase is after 3rd quarter moon.
High Tide occurs when ocean waters are at their highest level during the day (water is higher on the beach, less beach to walk on)
Low Tides occurs when ocean waters are at their lowest level during the day (water is not as high on the beach, more beach to walk on)
Spring Tides a difference between high and low tides is the greatest "HIGHEST of high tides and LOWEST of low tides- occurs during a Full Moon and New Moon. (Remember "Spring-Straight" The Sun, Earth, and Moon are in a straight line)
Neap Tides the least amount of difference between high and low tides- occurs during 1st and 3rd Quarter moons (Remember "Neap-Ninety" The Sun, Earth, and Moon make a 90 degree angle)
