Grammar: Use of the conditional tense

Conditional Perfect/le conditionnel passé: when used [irréel du passé] Usually an event that did not take place in the past. Situations or events which are no longer realizable. Tu m'aurais aidé? J'aurais tout fait pour t'aider.
Conditional - how formed Add imparfait endings to the infinitive OR future irregular tense [Alt: Future Stem + Imparfait endings] example
Conditional Présent/Conditionnel Passé: when used [demande poli] In questions/requests, as a sign of politeness. Aurais-tu vu Bernard? (Have you seen Bernard by any chance?) Tu connaîtrais un bon coiffeur ? Pourrais-je te laisser mes clefs ?
Conditional Présent/Conditionnel Passé: when used [fait non confirmé] When repeating reported speech. To give unconfirmed news or facts ("reportedly") L'attentat aurait fait 3 blessés grave (3 people are said to have been seriously injured in the attack) Jean serait à l'hôpital (Jean is supposedly in the hospital)
Conditionnel Passé: when used [reproche] To express reproach. Tu aurais pu ranger! (You could have tidied up)
Conditional Present: when used [conseil] When giving advice to someone À ta place, je prendrais la voiture. Il vaudrait mieux appeler tout de suite.
Conditional Present: when used [plans, wishes, dreams] To express uncertain plans, wishes or possibilities. Cela serait sympa de se voir à Paris [it would be nice to meet in Paris]
Contitional Present: when used [fait imaginaire] To express imaginary facts that have no link to reality Nous partirons sur un grand voilier dans les mers du Sud.
Conditional Present: when used [fait non confirmé (news reports)] Les Français ignoreraient que la mayonnaise est d'origine espagnole. example
Conditional Present: when used summary 1. Fait non confirmé [reported speech] 2. Politesse - in questions/requests 3. Fait imaginaire [plans, wishes, dreams] 4. Conseil [giving advice] 5. Doute, réserve 6. Surprise example
