| Renaissance | the period in Europe from the 14th to the 17th centuries during which art, literature and learning flourished. |
| Henry VIII | King of England (1509-1547) who established the Church of England when the Catholic Church's Pope refused to grant him a divorce. |
| Leonardo da Vinci | an Italian artist, musician, engineer and scientist in the 15th and 16th centuries. His famous works include The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. |
| Martin Luther | A German theologian and leader of the Protestant Reformation. He wrote the "Ninety-five Theses" in 1517 and was excommunicated from the Catholic Church in 1521. |
| Michelangelo | an Italian artist, architect and poet who worked in the 15th and 16th centuries. His famous works include David and the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. |
| Nicolaus Copernicus | a Polish astronomer who, in 1543, published a theory that the earth and other planets move around the sun. |
| Protestant | a member of one of the Christian churches that separated from the Catholic church during the Reformation. |
| Scientific Revolution | a period of advances in European sciences, mathematic and philosophy from 1500-1700. |
| Sistine Chapel | the chapel of the pope in the Vatican. It was erected in the 15th century and contains frescoes by Michelangelo. |
