Renaissance

TermDefinition
Galileo Galilei an Italian astronomer and physicist in the early 17th century. The Catholic Church's Inquisition forced him to withdraw his support for Copernicus's theory of the solar system in 1616.
Renaissance the period in Europe from the 14th to the 17th centuries during which art, literature and learning flourished.
Henry VIII King of England (1509-1547) who established the Church of England when the Catholic Church's Pope refused to grant him a divorce.
Leonardo da Vinci an Italian artist, musician, engineer and scientist in the 15th and 16th centuries. His famous works include The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa.
Martin Luther A German theologian and leader of the Protestant Reformation. He wrote the "Ninety-five Theses" in 1517 and was excommunicated from the Catholic Church in 1521.
Michelangelo an Italian artist, architect and poet who worked in the 15th and 16th centuries. His famous works include David and the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
Nicolaus Copernicus a Polish astronomer who, in 1543, published a theory that the earth and other planets move around the sun.
Protestant a member of one of the Christian churches that separated from the Catholic church during the Reformation.
Scientific Revolution a period of advances in European sciences, mathematic and philosophy from 1500-1700.
Sistine Chapel the chapel of the pope in the Vatican. It was erected in the 15th century and contains frescoes by Michelangelo.
