What is an ordeal? means of determining guilt in germanic law
How can someone be presumed innocent under Germanic law? If an accused person was unharmed after a physical trial, or ordeal, he or she was innocent

What are popes? Peter's successors; from the Latin word father
Who was Gregory I? strengthened the power of the papacy; also known as Gregory the Great
What is a papacy? office of the pope
Where do nuns live? Convents headed by abbesses
What are monks and nuns? What did they do? Monks-men nuns-women They began to withdraw from the world to dedicate themselves to God.
Who are missionaries? People who sent out to carry a religious message
Where to monks live? Monasteries
What were Benedictine's monasteries ruled by? An abbot, or "father"; who had complete control over the monks
What did monk do in the monasteries? 1. social workers of their communities 2. providing schools for the young 3. hospitality for travelers 4. hospitals for the sick 5. they taught peasants weaving and carpentry 6. made improvements in agriculture that they passed on to others
Who was Charlemagne? A roman emperor who greatly expanded the territory of the Frankish kingdom and created what came to be known as the Carolingian Empire
What are counts? (German Nobles) who acted as the king's chief representatives in local areas
Who was Europe attacked by? 1. Muslims - southern coasts of Europe 2. Vikings - Northmen or Norsemen of Scandinavia 3. Magyars - people from western India; moved into central Europe then settled on the plains of Hungary
Who established scriptoria (writing rooms)? Monasteries
What happened in scriptoria (writing rooms)? Monks copied not only the works of early Christianity, the bible, but also the works of Latin classical authors
How was the Carolingian Empire divided to Charlemagne's grandsons' after his death? In three major sections: 1. The west Frankish lands 2. The eastern Frankish lands 3. The middle Kingdom
What was at the heart of feudalism? The idea of vassalage
How did people take care of each other in Germanic society? 1. warriors wore an oath of loyalty to their leaders and fought for them 2. The leaders, in turn, took care of the warrior's needs
What is a vassal? A man who served a lord in a military capacity
What was the most important gift a lord could give his vassal? Land
What is a fief? The grant of land made to a vassal
What is a feudal contract and what did it do? A set of unwritten rules--determined the relationship between a lord and his vassal
What was a chivalry? A code of ethics that knights were supposed to uphold
When the lady of the castle managed the estate while the man was away at war or court, what would she do? The households could include large numbers of officials and servants so this was no easy task. -The lady was also responsible for food supply and maintaining other supplies need for smooth operation of the household
Who was Eleanor of Aquitaine? -Heiress to the duchy of Aquitaine in SW France -married at 15 to King Louis VII of France -the marriage was later annulled and she remarried to Duke Henry of Normandy 8 weeks later -two of her sons became kings of England-Richard and John
When did Justinian become emperor? He became emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine Empire) in 527-565 he was determined to reestablish the Roman Empire in the entire Med. World
What was Justinian's most important contribution? His codification of Roman Law -- the body of civil law
What was Constantinople? The capital of Eastern Roman Empire
What was the importance of the Crusades? To get rid of the Eastern Roman Empire
What are the Crusades? European Christians carried out a series of military expeditions to regain the Holy Land from the Muslims
What did the European Christians call the Muslims of the Holy Land? Infidels, or unbelievers of the Roman Catholic Church
What did a Crusade consist of? several thousand calvary(soldiers on horseback) and ten thousand infantry(marching soldiers)
