| bottom up processing | analysis begins with the sense receptors and works up to the level of the brain and mind |
| top down processing | information processing guided by higher level mental processes, drawing on experience and expectations |
| selective attention | perception about objects change from moment to moment |
| inattentional blindness | inability to see an object or a person in our midst |
| change blindness | inattentional blindness |
| pop out | distinct stimulus that automatically draws our eye |
| overt | pointing sensory systems at a particular stimulus |
| covert | shifting attention without the appearance of shifting the sensory system |
| phototransduction | conversion of light energy into neural impulses that the brain can understand |
| absolute threshold | minimum stimulation needed to detect a particular stimulus 50% of the time |
| subliminal threshold | when stimuli are below one's absolute threshold for conscious awareness |
| the priming effect | the activcation, unconsciously, of associations that predispose one's perception, memory, or response |
| difference threshold | minimum difference between two stimuli required for detection 50% of the time, also called "just noticeable difference" |
| wber's law | two stimuli must differ by a constant minimum percentage to be perceived as different. light-8 weight-2 tone-.3 |
| signal detection theory | there is no absolute threshold |
| sensory adaptation | diminished sensitivity as a consequence of constant stimulation (unchanging stimulus) |
