| Term | Definition |

| Volume | how loud or soft a sound is |
| Sound | vibrations sensed by the ear |
| Sound waves | the movement of sound energy through air, liquid, or solids |
| Vibrate | to move back and forth very quickly |
| Compress | to squeeze together |
| Decibel | the unit for measuring the loudness of a sound |
| Energy | any force that can move things or do work |
| Hear | to receive sound through the ears |
| Echo | The repetition of a sound caused by the sound of waves bouncing off a hard surface |
| Pitch | how high or low a sound is |
| Amplitude | how far a point or particle on the wave moves from its resting position: loudness is directly proportional to the amplitude of sound |
| Wavelength | distance between a point in one cycle and the same point in the next |
| Wave cycle | the pattern of movement that repeats in a wave |
| Noise | any kind of sound |
