Story Elements/Poetry

QuestionAnswer
Characters People the reader follows through a story.
Genre a term for any category or grouping of literature based on certain criteria, characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter.
Main Idea The central point or thought an author wants to communicate to readers.
Style Words, diction, syntax and structure that a writer uses.
Tone an author’s attitude about a subject or topic to their reader (Another word for style)
Imagery descriptive language used to appeal to a reader's senses: touch, taste, smell, sound, and sight.
Onomatapoeia the process of creating a word that phonetically imitates, resembles, or suggests the SOUND that it describes
Simile A figure of speech comparing 2 unalike things, using the words “Like” or “As.”
Poetry A genre of literature in which intensity is given to the expression of feelings and ideas.
Stanzas Poetry lines that are arranged into groups (looks like a paragraph)
Personification Giving and object or thing person like qualities.
metaphor a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable
