ambiguity multiple meanings of a word/phrase
antithesis when two contrasting ideas are intentionally juxtaposed. ex: "this chocolate ice cream is nutritionally deficient, but spiritually nourishing"
conceit a fanciful expression, usually in the form of an extended metaphor or surprising analogy between seemingly dissimilar objects. Displays intellectual cleverness as a result of the unusual comparison being made.
hyperbole figure of speech using deliberate exaggeration or overstatement. used for comic effect, often produces irony, the opposite of it is an understatement.
pedantic an adjective that describes words, phrases, or general tone that is overly scholarly. used to describe writing that borders on lecturing.
