5.2 Electrons
Electron Arrangement in atoms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Electron configuration | The ways in which electrons are arranged around the nuclei of atoms |
| aufbau Principle | Describes the sequence in which orbitals are filled |
| Consistent energy | The various orbitals within a sublevel of a principle energy level are always of consistent energy. |
| pauli exclusion principle | States that a maximum of two electrons can occupy each orbital |
| Hund's rule states that electrons pair up only after each orbital in a sublevel is occupied by | an electron |
| When using the shorthand method for showing the electron configuration atom blank are used to indicate the number electrons occupying each sublevel. | superscript |
| Correct electron configuratons can be obtained by using the Aufbau diagram for the elements y |
