Unit 3 Vocabulary

Science vocabulary for cellular respiration and photosynthesis.

TermDefinition
Producers Organisms that produce their own food
Photosynthesis Plants use the sun's energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into sugars
Photosynthesis equation 6CO2 + 6H2O ------> C6H12O6 + 6O2
Chloroplast An organelle found in plant cells where photosynthesis occurs
Thylakoids A flattened membrane sac inside the chloroplast
NADPH and ATP molecules that carry energy from the light dependent reaction to the light-independent reaction
Carbon dioxide molecule that is added to the light independent reaction in photosynthesis
Water Molecule that enters into the light dependent reaction and is broken by sunlight energy in photosynthesis
Oxygen Molecule that is released from the light dependent reaction as a waste in photosynthesis
Sugar Product of the light independent reaction
Cellular Respiration Process that releases energy from sugar in the presence of oxygen
Anaerobic respiration Respiration that does not require oxygen
Mitochondria Organelle that is the site of cellular respiration
Glycolysis The process that breaks down glucose into 2 pyruvate molecules
Krebs Cycle Process where the energy from pyruvate is converted into NADH and FADH2; produces carbon dioxide as a waste
NADH and FADH2 Molecules that carry energy from the krebs cycle to the electron transport chain
Electron transport chain Process that takes the energy from NADH and FADH2 and turns it into ATP
Anaerobic Process Glycolysis and fermentation
Pyruvate The molecule that enters the krebs cycle
Carbon dioxide Molecule that is produced as a waste in the kreb cycle in cellular respiration
Water molecule that is created as a product of the electron transport chain in cellular respiration
Carbon dioxide in cellular respiration molecule that is produced as a waste product in cellular respiration

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
