Elementary Particles
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Photons | Particles of light that have a tiny mass as they move at light speed, if they are at rest, they have no mass |
| Nuclear mass defect | Loss in energy, loss in mass |
| Elementary particle | having no components, smaller parts, or building blocks |
| Quark | The smaller parts of protons and neutrons |
| Hadron | Things that have quarks |
| Gluon | Massless particle that binds quarks together |
| Leptons | Things that don't have quarks |
| Positron | Positively charged electron |
| Pair production | When an electron and positron appear after a photon of gamma radiation passes through a heavy metal |
| Gamma radiation | an invisible, highly penetrating type of electromagnetic radiation composed of short-frequency, high-energy photons that are extremely dangerous |
| Electromagnetic radiation | any type of emitted energy |
| Neutrino | particle that has six forms, all of which have a charge of zero |
| The two types of hadrons | Mesons and Baryons |
| Mesons | has 2 quarks |
| Baryons | has 3 quarks |
