CHEM CHAPTER 17

QuestionAnswer
what is the common ion effect equilibrium shift because of the introduction of an ion that is "common" to the the reaction
what is the circumstance under which the equilibrium changes temperature changes
what is a buffer? a substance that resists changes in pH due to containing both acids and bases that are conjugate pairs
what does lypholized mean freeze dried
does the amount of buffer affect the pH? no, only the hydronium ion concentration
the reaction of a strong acid and a strong base produces... a salt and water
at the equivalence point.. the moles of the base equals the moles of acid titrated
what is special about the midway point? it is where the concentration of the conjugate base equals the concentration of the acid
what is the henderson hasselbach equation PH= pKa + log (conjugate base/acid)
at midway point, ph = pKa
what is the special about titration of ppolyprotic acids? they have multiple equivalence points
acid/ base indicators change color at a specific pH due to... conjugated pi bonds
what is occuring in a saturated solution? the solution is in equilibrium with undissolved solute
What is Ksp? extent of solubility determined by a salt's ion concentrations
Which would be more soluble, AgCl or AgBr? AgCl
Ksp >1 MX is soluble
Ksp< 1 MX is insoluble
Ksp roughly equals 1 Mx is slightly soluble
solubility is expressed in... g/L
adding a basic salt does what to solubility? increases it
Q = KSP saturated
Q< Ksp not saturated
Q > Ksp Solution is oversaturated and precipitation wont occur
what are ligands? lewis bases that form coordinate covalent bonds
