| fossil | the trace or remains of an organisom that lived long ago most comminly preserved in sedementary rock |
| trace fossil | a fossilized structure such as a footrpint or a coprolite that formed in sedementary rock by an animal activity om or within soft sediment |
| climate | the weather conditions in an area over a long period of time |
| ice core | a long cylidnaer of ice obtained from drilling through ice caps or ice sheetes used to study past climates |
| relitave dating | any method of determining whether an ebent or object is older or younger than other events or objects |
| superposition | a principal that states that younger rocks lie above older rocks if the layersw have not been distributed |
| uncomformity | a break in the geologic recodf created when rock layers are eroded or when sediment is not depostited for a long peroid of time |
| geologic colllumn | an orderd arrangment of rock layers that is based on the relitive ages of rocks and in wich oldestr riocks are on the bottom |
