U2 Terms and Definitions

TermDefinition
Percentile Percent of observations less than a given data value, always rounded to the nearest whole number
Ogive Graph of the cumulative relative frequency, a line graph
Flat Ogives No change in section because there are no observations in that range
Deciles Cumulative relative frequencies divided into 10 pieces: (10%, 20%, 30% etc.)
Quintiles Cumulative relative frequencies divided into 5 pieces: (20%, 40%, 60% etc.)
Density Curve A smooth curve that describes the overall pattern of the distribution
Normal Distribution A variable described by a normal density curve: symmetric, mean is directly in the center, majority of data is within 1 standard deviation
