| vertical | Going in an up/down direction. |
| horizontal | Comes from the word horizon. Going in a left/right direction. |
| height | The vertical measurement of how tall something or someone is. |
| width | The horizontal measurement from side to side of how wide something or someone is. |
| corresponding angles | Angles that “match up” between two figures. |
| corresponding side lengths | Side lengths that “match up” between two figures. |
| original figure | The picture or shape you start with. |
| image | The picture or shape you end up with after a transformation. |
| scale factor | The number that the side lengths of one figure are multiplied by to give the corresponding side lengths of a similar figure. The ratio of the side lengths in the image to side lengths of an original. |
| ratio | A comparison of two quantities (numbers) related by multiplication. |
| mathematical similarity | Two figures are mathematically similar if: 1. Their corresponding angles have the same measure. 2. Each side length of the original can be multiplied by the same number (the scale factor) to find the corresponding side lengths in the image. |
