| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Oxidation Number | Number of an atom is zero in a neutral substance that contains atoms of only one element |
| Oxidation-Reduction Reaction | Any chemical reaction in which the oxidation number of a molecule, atom, or ion changes by gaining or losing an electron |
| Reactants | A substance that takes part in and undergoes change during a reaction |
| Products | A substance that is present at the end of a chemical reaction |
| Coefficients | A number placed in front of a chemical symbol |
| Law of Conservation of Mass | Mass is neither created nor destroyed in chemical reactions |
| Combustion Reaction | A reaction in which a substance reacts with oxygen gas, releasing energy in the form of light and heat |
| Decomposition reaction | Processes in which chemical species break up into simpler parts |
| synthesis reaction | Reactions that occur when two different atoms or molecules interact to form a different molecule or compound |
| single displacement reaction | A reaction in which one element is substituted for another element in a compound |
| double displacement reaction | Two ionic compounds that are exchanging anions or cations. |
| Monatomic ions | An ion formed from a single atom |
| nomenclature | the devising or choosing of names for things, especially in a science or other discipline. |
| oxyanions | an ion with the generic formula A. xO z− y |
| formula mass | the sum of the atomic weights of the atoms in the empirical formula of the compound |
| percent composition | tells you by mass what percent of each element is present in a compound |
| empirical formula | the simplest whole number ratio of atoms present in a compound |
| chemical equation | shows the starting compounds, the reactants on the left and the final compounds, the products on the right, separated by an arrow |
| word equation | represents a chemical reaction using the names of the substances involved |
| formula equation | represents the reactants and products of a chemical reaction by their symbols or formulas |
| reversible reaction | a reaction in which the conversion of reactants to products and the conversion of products to reactants occur simultaneously |
