Nature of Matter
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Physics | Study of matter |
| Matter | Anything that has mass/inertia |
| Inertia | Property of matter that resists change/movement |
| Density | Mass over volume |
| Specific gravity | Sample density divided by the standard density |
| Molecule | Chemical combination of 2 or more atoms |
| Elemental molecule | Molecules of the same type |
| Compound | Molecules that form different elements |
| Pure substance | Substances containing only 1 type of atom |
| Mixtures | Physical combination of 2 or more elements/compounds |
| Homogeneous mixture | Mixture that is uniformly combined |
| Heterogeneous mixture | Mixture that is unevenly distributed |
| Mass | Amount of matter/inertia, does not change |
| Weight | How much gravity pulls on something, can change depending on gravity |
| Solid | Definite shape and volume, low energy particles packed together, difficult to compress |
| Liquid | Definite volume, indefinite shape, more energy than solids, molecules move around, takes shape of container |
| Gas | Indefinite shape and volume, high energy particles with total freedom of movement, easy to compress |
| Plasma | Highly ionized gas that has many positive ions and electrons, only found in extremely high temperatures where the electrons separate |
| Standard density for solids/liquids | Water (1) |
| Standard density for gasses | Hydrogen (0.0899) |
