Rhetoric Effective or persuasive speaking or writing. Supported by figure of speech and other compositional techniques (Stylistic choices, tone, ect.)
Rhetoric Appeals Makes the argument as persuasive as possible Aristotle’s Rhetorical Triangle (ethos, logos, pathos)
Ethos Based on credibility, (trustworthy, reputation, tone/style of text) Example: An actress doing an advertisement
Logos Based on Logic, (reasoning, argumentation, facts, figures, case studies, statistics) Example: Statistics shown about a study
Pathos Based on Emotion, (Emotional, imaginative, impactful, stories) Example: Those sad advertisements about dogs
SOAPSTone Key Elements of Rhetorical Situation (Subject, Occasion, Audience, Purpose, Speaker,Tone)
Subject The general topic and content
Occasion Content, time and place, EXIGENCE(Event), and then the effect of that
Audience viewers for speakers claim
Purpose Speaker’s intention, what the speaker wants us to believe?
Speaker Who is putting forward the claim, what do we know about the speaker?
Tone Attitude of the story, author’s attitude towards audience/characters
