What were the main exports of China? porcelain, tea, silk, paper, and gunpowder
How did the Mongols improve the Silk Roads? they unified much of the land the roads stretched across and punished bandits, making travel safer
What were some innovations that made transportation over land safer and more efficient? Caravans, new camel saddles
What maritime technologies were created/improved during this period? magnetic compass, the rudder (helped w/ ship control), the astrolabe, the junk (large, multiple sails, less likely to sink), lateen sails (caught winds easier)
What were some of the causes for the increase in global trade? technological innovations, imperial expansion/the rise of powerful states, safer/more reliable travel, and an increased demand for luxury goods.
What were two significant cities along the Silk Roads where water and food could be found which were also centers of Islamic learning? Kashgar and Samarkand
What were caravanserai? Inns where travelers and their animals could rest and recover
What change did many economies go through during this period? They went from barter economies to money economies
What was flying cash? A system where merchants could deposit a certain sum of money at one location and withdraw the same amount at another
What were the commercial innovations of this period? flying cash, banking houses, and bills of exchange
What did the increase in money economies eventually lead to? The end of feudalism in Europe; wealth began to be measured in factors other than land
What were some of the effects of the increase in global trade? increased cultural/biological/technological diffusion, new trading cities emerged, the rapid spread of disease (Bubonic Plague), development of new languages (Urdu, Swahili)
Why was Indian Ocean trade much more efficient than trade through other routes? Merchants could transport more goods for cheaper since cargo ships could carry much more than caravans
