what caused the Bacon Rebellion? the land was becoming scarcer, so there was a reluctance to grant freed servants land. Freedmen become very frusterated
Bacon's Rebellion (1676) rebellion led by Nathaniel Bacon against Governor William Berkeley.
What did Governor William Berkeley do to anger Bacon and his followers? he had a deal with the natives so he didn't take their land and refused to retaliate against Indian attacks
how did Bacon Rebellion end? Bacon dies of disease, Berkeley hangs the rebels.
impact of Bacon Rebellion indentured servants were now seen as a problem because they were involved in the rebellion. African slave labor seen as a better option now.
why did African slavery increase in the colonies mid 1680s? blacks began to outnumber whites on plantations bc planters fear rebellious white servants, mortality rates improve=less risky to buy slaves, new rice & indigo planting= demand for labor
middle passage African captives suffer grueling journey on ships with abominable conditions & tight quarters
Southern Society hierarchy: 1.) merchant planters 2.)small farmers 3.) landless whites 4.) white indentured servants 5.) oppressed black slaves
cities in the south: few cities; mainly isolated rural communities & plantations
cities in the north: many small cities and big cities
Life in NE: clean water & cool temps =less disease= longer life spans. big families and strong social structure
Life in South: short lives, women get property rights if husband dies
Women in Puritan NE: - can't vote, viewed as weaker than men - more severely punished for crimes like adultery
