ELA vocabulary for 7th and 8th grade

TermDefinition
sentence a group of words that begins with a capital letter, contains a subject and a predicate, expresses a complete thought, and ends with an appropriate punctuation mark
complete subject the simple subject and all words and phrases that go with it
complete predicate the simple predicate and all words and phrases that go with it
sentence fragment only part of a sentence
subordinate clause a group of words that is part of a sentence and cannot stand on its own
subject tells who or what the sentence is about
predicate tells what the subject does, is, has, or feels
verb a word that expresses action, being, or state of being
verb phrases one or more helping verbs plus a main verb
inverted sentence a sentence in which the subject comes after the verb
compound subject two or more subjects with the same verb
compound verb two or more verbs with the same subject
direct object a noun, pronoun, or group of words that tells who or what receives the action of the verb
linking verb a verb that does not express action, but instead joins the subject with a subject complement
subject complement a noun, pronoun, or adjective that follows a linking verb and that identifies or describes the subject
predicate nominative a noun or pronoun that identifies or renames the subject and that follows a linking verb
predicate adjective an adjective that describes the subject and that follows a linking verb
plagiarism presenting someone else’s words as if they were your own, whether you mean to or not
action verb a verb that shows a physical or mental action
some linking verbs am, appear, are, become, feel, grow, is, look, seem, smell, sound, taste, was, were
some helping verbs be, been, being, can, did, do, does, have, is, were, will
