VOCAB UNIT TWO
GEOMETRIC APPLICATIONS OF EXPONENTS
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| cone | a solid (3-dimensional) object that has a circular base joined to a point by a curved side |
| coordinate plane | the plane containing the x-axis and the y-axis |
| cylinder | a solid object with two identical flat ends that are circular (or more generally have a curved boundary) and one curved side. it has the same cross-section from one end to the other |
| diameter | the distance from one point on a circle through the center to another point on the circle. it is the longest distance across the circle and twice the radius. |
| hypotenuse | the side opposite the right angle in a right triangle. it is also the longest side of the right triangle |
| leg | this refers to a side other than the one opposite the right angle |
| Pythagorean Theorem | in a right triangle, the square of the long side is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides |
| radius | the distance from the center to the edge of a circle. it is half of the circle's diameter |
| right triangle | a triangle that has a right angle |
| sphere | a 3-dimensional object shaped like a ball. every point on the surface is the same distance from the center |
| volume | the amount of 3-dimensional space something takes up |
