What is a Notary? A notary is an appointed public official who: • Acts as an impartial witness • Helps defend against fraud • Determines the competency and willingness of their customers A notary is not an attorney
A conflict of interest for a notary includes: • Notarizing their own signature • Notarizing documents if you or your spouse have a direct or financial interest in the transaction or record other than receiving a regular salary, hourly wage or notary fees
You have the right to refuse service at your discretion and if you believe your customer: not competent, doesn’t understand, reluctant to sign, doesn’t look like the photo on the ID presented, signature doesn’t match NOT refuse based on i.e., race, color, religion, gender), gender identity or expression, disability or marital status.
Eligibility Requirements at least 18 , Be a citizen or permanent legal resident of the United States, Be a resident of or have a place of employment in PA - The Dep of State may request that an employer provide written evidence for an employee who does not reside in PA.
