| Phrase | a group of words without a subject and a verb |
| Clause | a group of words with a subject and a verb |
| Dependent clause | a group of words with a subject and a verb that cannot stand alone as a sentence; it must have an independent clause |
| Independent clause | a group of words with a subject and verb that can stand alone as a sentence |
| Simple sentence | a sentence which contains one independent clause |
| Compound sentence | a sentence which contains two independent clauses |
| Complex sentence | a sentence which contains a dependent and one independent clause |
| Compound complex sentence | a sentence which contains two independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses |
| Fragment | a group of words that does not express a complete thought |
| Comma splicing | the error of joining two independent clauses with only a comma |
| Fused sentence | the error of joining two independent clauses with nothing at all |
| Run-on sentence | the error of joining more than two independent clauses with and or but |
| Verbal phrase | a group of words with a verbal - infinitive, gerund, or participle |
| Coordination | the act of joining two independent clauses in one of three ways: 1) Semicolon (;) 2) Semicolon (;) + conjunctive adverb + comma (,) 3) Comma (,) + coordinate conjunction |
| Subordination | the act of joining an independent clause to a dependent clause using a subordinate conjunction |
