Literary Terms

| onomatopoeia | the use of words that imitate sounds |
| point of view | the perspective from which the story is told |
| 3rd person limited narrator | view point of a narrator outside the story that reveals thoughts of only one character |
| protagonist | the leading character in a short story, play or novel |
| plot | a series of related events that create a story |
| personification | giving inanimate objects life like qualities |
| mood | the feeling created in the reader by a literary work |
| metaphor | a comparison between two things in which one is identified with another |
| irony | a contrast between what is expected and what happens |
| internal conflict | a struggle between two opposing forces inside the character |
| non-fiction | prose writing that is based on fact and real events |
| 1st person narrator | story is told from the viewpoint of one of the characters |
| imagery | words or phrases that appeal to the senses |
| hyperbole | the extreme exaggeration of something |
| allusion | a reference to another well-known literary or historical word/person |
| antogonist | anyone or anything that causes conflict for the main character |
| climax | the highest point of interest or suspense |
| external conflict | struggle between the character and an outside source |
| falling action | the events directly after the climax |
| exposition | introduce the setting, characters, and basic situation |
| dynamic character | a character that changes |
| characterization | the analysis of a character to better understand the character |
| alliteration | the repetition of initial consonant sounds |
| 3rd person omniscient narrator | viewpoint of an all-knowing narrator who knows the thoughts of any character |
| genre | a category or type of writing characterized by a particular form, style or content |
| foreshadow | the use of giving clues to suggest events which have yet to occur |
| flat character | an underdeveloped character |
| tone | the authors attitude toward the subject |
| theme | the central idea or insight into life |
| symbol | anything that signifies something beyond itself |
| suspense | a feeling of uncertainty or curiosity about what will happen in a story |
| static character | a character that stays the same |
| simile | a comparison using like or as |
| setting | the time, place, social and physical environment in which the action occurs |
| round character | a well developed character |
| rising action | events leading up to the climax |
| resolution | how the conflict is resolved |
| flashback | when the sequence of events is interrupted to go to a former moment |
| figurative language | the opposite of literal meaning |
| fiction | prose that describes imaginary events and or characters. |
