Poetic Structure

Terms and Definitions

TermDefinition
Stanza Means “room” in Italian. It is a grouped set of lines within a poem, usually set off from other stanzas by white space above and below. It is also called a verse.
Couplet A pair of lines that rhyme.
Poem for Two Voices A poem written in two columns. Two students read the poem, and each chooses a column to read. When there are words that appear on the same line, the students read those words in unison.
Line break The place where a poet chooses to end one line and begin another. It can be written without traditional punctuation.
White space The area around the poem.
Alignment (Left, right, center) The way the words of a poem line up on the page.
