| liquid | spaced out, indefinite shape and definite volume |
| gas | empty space, indefinite shape/volume |
| physical property | properties which are determined without altering a substance (colour, size, shape) |
| qualitative | descriptions using 5 senses such as odour, colour, lustre |
| quantitative | descriptions involving numbers such as mass, height, boiling point |
| chemical properties | how substances react with other compounds (eg rusting, burning, tarnishing) |
| chemical change | a new substance that forms with different chemical properties and is difficult to reverse |
| physical change | change of state, change of shape, no new substance is formed reversible, dissolved |
| evidence of chemical changes | change in colour, smell (odour), absorption of heat (endothermic), production of heat (exothermic), formation of bubbles, formation of precipitate, production of light |
