Exploration and Early Colonization

Christopher Columbus First European to encounter the "New World". His voyage starts the "Age of Exploration, and Columbian Exchange. Mission to find a route to Asia by sea.
Hernan Cortes Spanish Conquistador that Conquers the Aztec Empire in 1519.
Pineda Created the first map and charts Texas coastline. He is killed in 1520 by Native uprising.
Cabeza De Vaca He is a survivor who is one of the First Europeans to step on Texas soil. Explored Texas and Mexico for 7 years. In 1542 he publishes a book on his discoveries.
Narvaez Spanish Conquistador who explores Gulf coast to the North of Mexico and vanishes into the Gulf of Mexico in 1528.
Coronado Spanish Conquistador who explores all the way up to Kansas in search of gold/treasure. His expedition goes through the panhandle of Texas in 1540.
Desoto First Spanish explorer to discover the Mississippi River, and dies soon after crossing the Mississippi River.
Moscoso 1542 He takes command and came to East Texas by accident, met Caddo people, and found petroleum.
Onate From New Spain, and in 1598 explored West Texas and New Mexico. Establishes Santa Fe, and El Paso.
La Salle The only French explorer-1684 he lands in Texas by mistake. Killed by his own men . Establishes settlement Fort St. Louis in Texas.
Pizzarro In 1532 this Spanish Conquistador conquers the Incan Empire in South America.
Fray Damian Massanet Established first Spanish mission in East Texas- San Francisco de los Tejas.
Father Francisco Hidalgo Writes letter in secret to French Governor in Louisiana asking to rebuild mission in East Texas for trade.
Friar Antonio Olivares Friar-True founder of mission San Antonio de Valero.
Don Martin de Alarcon Governor-The official founder of San Antonio de Valero.
Jose de Escandon Founded 20 settlements from northern Mexico to the San Antonio River.
Three G's God-Gold-Glory; (Spread Christianity -Catholic religion)-(wealth)-(power/fame).
