Chemistry The study of matter and the changes it undergoes.
Organic chemistry The study of carbon-containing compounds.
Inorganic chemistry The study of substances that don’t have carbon.
Analytical chemistry Chemistry that focuses on the composition of matter.
Physical chemistry The study of the behavior of materials.
Biochemistry The chemistry of living things.
Observe The first step in the scientific method.
Hypothesis A possible explanation of observations in the natural world; second step in the scientific method.
Experiment A systematic way of testing a hypothesis by gathering data; third step in the scientific method.
Theory A hypothesis with significant experimental evidence to support it; fourth step in the scientific method.
Take action The fifth step in the scientific method.
Scientific thinking A way of thinking introduced by the emergence of modern science.
Natural law A statement or fact that applies to many scientific situations.
Physical properties Characteristics of a substance that can be observed without a chemical change.
Chemical properties Characteristics of a substance that describe how well it reacts chemically.
Physical changes A change in the state of appearance of a substance.
Chemical changes A change in the identity of a substance; a chemical reaction.
Reactants The substances before the reaction (on the left side).
Products The substances after the reaction (on the right side).
Law of conservation of mass A law which states that matter can not be created or destroyed in a chemical reaction.
Elements The simplest form of matter which has only one type of atom.
Compounds A chemical fusion of two or more elements.
Pure substances A substance that has no component of another compound or element, made of only one type of atom or molecule.
Mixture A physical blend of two or more substances.
Homogeneous mixture A uniform mixture which has the same composition throughout, also called solutions.
Heterogeneous mixture A mixture that is not uniform in composition, components are not evenly distributed throughout the mixture.
Solid A state of matter which has a definite shape and volume.
Liquid A state of matter which has no definite shape but has a definite volume.
Gas A state of matter which has no definite shape or volume.
