Molecular Formulas
| Molecular Formulas: Process | Answer |
|---|---|
| Molecular Formula | Chemical formula indicates the type and the number of atoms in a molecule. Subscripts are actual numbers of atoms per molecule (P4O10= 4 mole P and 10 mole O). Multiply empirical subscripts by n to get molecular subscripts |
| Molecular formula | = n (Empirical Formula) |
| n= | Molar Mass of compound/Empirical Formula Mass |
| Molecula formula = 2 (P2O5) | = P4O10 |
| Molecular Formula from Empirical Formula and Molar Mass: Step 1 | Convert each mole of element from Empirical Formula to mass |
| Molecular Formula from Empirical Formula and Molar Mass: Step 2 | Empirical Formula Mass is the total mass of all elements |
| Molecular Formula from Empirical Formula and Molar Mass: Step 3 | Determine "n" by dividing the Molar Mass by the Empirical Formula Mass |
| Molecular Formula from Empirical Formula and Molar Mass: Step 4 | Round "n" to the nearest whole number |
| Molecular Formula from Empirical Formula and Molar Mass: Step 5 | Molecular Formula = n x Empirical Formula |
