Empirical Formulas
| Empirical Formulas: Process | Answer |
|---|---|
| Empirical Formula | Simpllest formulas show which elements are present in a compound, with their mole ratios indicated as subscripts. Subscripts are mole-to-mole ratios(P2O5 = 2 mole P: 5 mole O) |
| Empirical Formula from mass percent: Step 1 | Write the mass percent as a mass (mass percent is just mass per 100 g sample) |
| Empirical Formula from mass percent: Step 2 | Convert each mass to moles |
| Empirical Formula from mass percent: Step 3 | Divide each molar amount by the smallest molar amount |
| Empirical Formula from mass percent: Step 4 | Round the mole ratios to the nearest whole number or simple fraction |
| Empirical Formula from mass percent: Step 5 | These are the subscripts in the empirical formula |
