Numerical expression | a mathematical phrase that contains only numbers and mathematical operations |
Exponent | indicates the number of times a number is multiplied by itself |
Base | the number being multiplied by itself |
Evaluate | to find its value |
Order of operations | rules that let you know which operation to perform first |
Variable | a letter used to represent an unspecified number |
Algebraic Expression | an expression that contains at least one variable, numbers and mathematical operation symbols |
Term | a number, variable or the product/quotient of a number and variable |
Variable term | term that contains a variable |
Constant term | a term that does not contain a variable |
Additive identities | 5 + 0 |
Additive inverses | 4 + (-4) |
Multiplicative identities | 3 * 1 = 3 |
Multiplicative inverses | 2/3 * 3/2 = 1 |
Associative property | (3 * 6) * 5 = 3 * (6 * 5) |
Commutative property | 8 + 12 = 12 + 8 |
Coefficient | a number before the variable |
Like terms | terms containing the same variable and/or exponent |
distributive property | 2 (x + y) = 2x + 2y |
