Term | Definition |
---|---|
function | a relationship between an independent variable, x, and a dependent variable, y, where each value of x (input) has one and only one value of y (output). |
ordered pair | Two numbers written in a certain order. Usually written in parentheses like this: (12,5) Which can be used to show the position on a graph, where the "x" (horizontal) value is first, and the "y" (vertical) value is second. |
coordinate plane | A coordinate plane is a tool used for graphing points, lines, and other objects. It functions like a map that follows directions from one point to another. |
rate of change | the slope of a function |
initial value | the starting output value of a function, where the function crosses the y-axis |
linear function | A function that represents a straight line on the coordinate plane. |
nonlinear function | A function that results in a graph is not a straight line. |
y=mx+b | the slope-intercept form of the equation of a straight line |
slope | slope = rise / run or (y2-y1) / (x2 - x1), also the rate of change |
y-intercept | the y-value where the function crosses the y axis |
m | slope |
b | y-intercept |
